CAUTION!
I added the biographical note to this person because a newspaper article, contained
in the Olver papers passed down from Jessie Olver Snr (wife of George T. Olver),
appears to possibly reference him - See Biographical
Notes. From the name I concluded this may have been the same person
as that shown as the son of Henry Olver (Snr.) otherwise why would the article
have been significant to Jessie?. According to the article this person was an
Admiral in the Royal Navy and his flagship was the battleship HMS 'Revenge' (sunk
by the Japanese during WWII).
A Scottish
web site claims he was a Scot and that the surname is 'Oliver' - which is
right? Web page or newspaper clipping from 1925? According to the Scottish site
their Adml Oliver was born in 1865 and died in 1965 and that he "in 1913
became Director of Naval Intelligence. In October he took up the position of
Chief of the Naval War Staff that he held until 1919" and he continued in
the Secret Service through to WW2. They do not link him to 'H.M.S.Revenge'
though, so is it likely that, as a senior officer in the Secret Service, he would
be back at sea as commander of a battleship, aged 60, in 1925? Possibly. Is
it likely that a second person with such similarity in surname also became an
Admiral at roughly the same time frame? I don't really think so, but it
is possible. An interesting conundrum! More information please!!
