Gerald was a very good boxer - and, in his youth, was hero worshipped by his
younger brother Nigel. He was apparently very intelligent but unmotivated
and lacked direction to his life. According to both Nigel and Mamie
Webb, his first wife was a lovely person and by all accounts their divorce was
a sad development. According to one of his sisters, he was
deserted by
his second wife who, at the same time, supposedly diverted to her own credit,
aid sent by Nigel (However see rebuttal below). Charity workers found
Gerald as a
derelict in the Durban dockland area and he was sent to an aged
care establishment north of Durban where he died some time later.

Dear Robin,
Having read your entries on your (family) web pages I have found the following
mistakes which require correction..
1. Marjorie (Mathews) Webb DID NOT desert Gerald. Gerald himself decided to
go to South Africa to look for work
(he was unemployable) and when he found it was going to send for Marjorie and
daughter, of course that never transpired,
I was old enough to remember this happening at the time. Also Marjorie was never
given or offered any money by your
father she asked him for help (I was there at the time) and was refused, Gerald
died while Marjorie was arranging
transport down to S.A. No one in their right mind would have blamed Marjorie
if she had left him as he was mentally
deranged and abused us, also was stopped by Marjorie from trying to get to your
mother with an axe!, I could go on,
however that is another story which I am positive that the webb (sic) family
would not like aired especially Nigel!.."
Gerald was a dark brooding man, subject to the blackest of moods and
he definitely had a very short fuse to violent outbursts. Whilst I was not aware
of the episode with the axe,
I was aware that Mamie Webb (Sister in Law) loathed
him and had a deal of compassion for Marjorie in her situation. Perhaps this was as a result of
the incident?
